LED traffic signals greatly reduce energy costs, however their low energy consumption means they may not generate enough heat to melt accumulated snow on the
surface of lenses – which can pose a serious safety threat to motorist and pedestrian.
Authorities deciding to manually clear the snow can exposed work crews to danger and incur a financial burden for a labour intensive and time consuming job.
To overcome the conundrum Zitek has developed MeltSmart LED traffic signals, a fully automated system that detects the snow on the lenses and powers a heating element to melt it. MeltSmart uses multiple photoelectric and thermo sensors to detect when the traffic lights are obscured by snow and activate and control the heating elements.
Since an initial installation five years ago in Korea, MeltSmart signals are reported to have shown strong and stable performance even in harsh weather conditions.
