For Econolite, demonstrating the power and flexibility of its Centracs ATMS capabilities here at the ITS World Congress has been made easy through a recent deployment which implemented an innovative route-based signal priority system in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Addressing a complex traffic signal control, emergency vehicle, and transit priority challenge in Charlotte, Econolite worked with the city’s DOT, fire, and transit departments to develop and implement an innovative route-based signal control priority solution.
The company, working closely with the three departments and understanding the needs and existing system challenges, was able to leverage the powerful capabilities of its Centracs ATMS and EOS controller software.
The result was a traffic control system that exceeds traditional emergency vehicle pre-emption and transit signal priority. It provides safer and quicker response time for emergency vehicles, and better on-time efficiency for transit. Moreover, the solution saved the city tens of millions of dollars over an alternative traditional priority system.
Through Centracs’ centre-to-centre capability, Econolite was able to connect to the fire department computer-aided dispatch and transit systems. With Centracs actively coordinating with the fire and transit systems, vehicle data such as classification, location/position, route and ETA, is exchanged.
This enables Centracs to push the data to the traffic signal controllers along an entire route, allowing EOS’ conflict resolution to adjust signal timing phases. By automatically adjusting phases along the impacted route and the combination of Centracs and EOS delivers a route-based signal control solution optimising signal coordination, enhancing transit on-time performance and reducing emergency vehicle response times.
