Switzerland's Federal Roads Office (Fedro) has commissioned Yunex Traffic to automate traffic management on the country's roads.

The deal, worth 30 million Swiss francs ($30.4m), will see Yunex using its Varia highway traffic management platform as part of the planned Traffic Management Switzerland project.

"Digitalisation and automation are the keys to greater efficiency, safety and sustainability on our roads," says Daniel Bärtsch, MD, Yunex Traffic Switzerland.

Varia can encourage speed reduction in the event of a sharp increase in traffic volumes to ensure that vehicles remain flowing, for example, and will give Fedro an overview of Switzerland's roads.

The first phase of the project will involve the installation of Varia and the integration of "selected traffic management systems".

Over the next 10 years, the remaining traffic management systems in Switzerland will be connected and integrated.
