Kistler is showcasing its weigh-in-motion solution at ITS World Congress 2025, demonstrating how transportation agencies can take better care of ageing bridge infrastructure though better weight limit enforcement.
Headquartered in Switzerland, Kistler manufactures piezoelectric quartz sensors that can weigh loads travelling up to 250 kilometres per hour. The company even grows its own crystals for the sensors that provide high accuracy and long-term stability.
Kistler weigh-in-motion is currently deployed with the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) along the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Trucks travelling in both directions are automatically weighed when they pass over Kistler’s in-road sensors. Vehicles that are over the allocated weight are flagged, recorded via licence plate and DOT identification numbers and automatically issued a citation without having to pull the vehicle over.
