NEC is showcasing the world’s first Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) technology at ITS World Congress 2025 this week, showing how existing communication fiber-optic networks can be turned into high-resolution sensors. DFOS detects vibrations and acoustic signals along spans of up to 100 km with 10-metre spatial resolutions.

This allows transportation agencies to better monitor pavement moisture, temperature changes and vehicle movement in real time – ultimately enabling more proactive traffic management, preventive maintenance, early hazard detection and overall road-safety improvements.

According to the company, DFOS promises to transform highway management by reducing accidents and optimising maintenance activities.
