Jim Misener of Qualcomm

The increasing importance of 5G – and the new connectivity it will allow on the roads – is occupying the attention of Qualcomm at the ITS World Congress. “There are lots of ways you can slice and dice it,” explains Jim Misener, the company’s senior director, technical standards. “We’re putting a lot of emphasis on mission-critical standards.”

5G’s importance in ITS is reflected by the expansion of the 5G Automotive Association, he adds. It was set up only two years ago but now has nearly 100 members, primarily from the auto and telecoms sectors. Such issues as spectrum availability, privacy and data protection are ongoing, says Anne-Lise Thieblemont, senior director, government affairs. In five years’ time the company believes the penetration of 5G in cars will be close to 100%. “We’ll have the communication tenets for self-driving cars,” says Thieblemont. “We’ll have enabled app developers from the ITS and automotive communities to leverage the power of 5G.”
