GoAppified’s Smart Beacon system enables seamless unattended ticketing for transit passengers and allows them to pay automatically using their mobile phone.
The system has two major components: a two-way Bluetooth and Wi-Fi unit which is roof mounted (or within a station) and alters the appropriate app on any user’s phone within range. Narrow beam bi-directional Bluetooth antennas are fitted within the vehicle or carriage to detect when the user boards and leaves the bus or train.
Ticket price information for that journey is then sourced from the operator, allowing the user to be automatically charged using their preferred payment method - which can include a direct debit from their nominated bank account.
The on-board system is pre-programmed to accept and work with all payment systems the operator accepts, allowing users to choose which method they prefer, and an NFC card reader can also be attached to the system to accept an operator’s existing smart card.
According to GoAppified’s CEO Søren Jensen, changes in European banking regulations mean user authorised traders, including transport operators, can now make direct debits from a user’s account to avoid the fee banks apply to card transactions (and which cannot be passed on to the user).
