The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is using $5.7 million to replace the ageing Algiers Point landing barge with a new ferry service.

The funding is part of the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) 2021 Passenger Ferry Grant Programme.

Flozell Daniels, Jr., RTA board chair, says: “Federal funding provided to agencies through programmes, such as FTA’s 2021 Passenger Ferry Programme, provides the essential support for continued access to ferry service today and into the future.”

RTA CEO Alex Z. Wiggins says: “Our vision for the future of transit is reliant on building the necessary infrastructure through essential vessels and facilities that will enhance the rider's experience. We are thankful to our partners at the FTA, the RTA board of commissioners, and our local and state partners for their continued support of RTA’s vision in improving mobility in the region that is safe and reliable.”

Mayor of New Orleans LaToya Cantrell says: “This award is another great example of how we are leveraging federal dollars to improve our ageing infrastructure and quality of life for all New Orleans residents and visitors."

The Passenger Ferry Grant Programme funds capital projects that support existing passenger ferry service, establish new ferry service, and upgrade ferry boats, terminals, and related facilities and equipment. The grants also help transit agencies and ferry companies offset the considerable cost of introducing new, climate-friendly propulsion technologies.
