An ITS system developed by Kapsch TrafficCom has been deployed on the Palmillas-Apaseo Highway, north-west of Mexico City.

Twenty-one traffic cameras, six variable message signs, one weather station, two Weigh in Motion (WiM) stations and five traffic counting points with axle-based classification are included in the work, with everything integrated into Kapsch’s EcoTrafiX control centre platform.

Santiago Rosas, traffic solutions manager for Kapsch Latin America, says: “The implementation on Palmillas-Apaseo not only improves the user experience but also positions Mexico at the forefront of intelligent road infrastructure in Latin America.”

Kapsch points to what it calls a ‘vehicle integrity system’, which the firm says enables continuous vehicle tracking through strategically placed licence plate recognition cameras along the route and at toll plazas.

“This technology allows for the generation of origin-destination matrices, travel time calculations, detection of ‘lost’ vehicles, and prevention of illegal entries or exits,” Kapsch says.

“The information generated by the system then enables real-time tracking of each vehicle, visibility of travel times for each subsection and the entire section, hourly occupancy levels, and queue times at toll plazas, all of which serve as support for operations and decision-making. In case of anomalies, the system automatically sends alerts to the control centre, significantly enhancing road safety.”

In particular, the system detects wanted or blacklisted vehicles and obtains detailed information on routes, speeds and travel times.

Kapsch says it can also generate key environmental and operational performance indicators and integrate with toll data for auditing and evasion control.
