New administrators have officially joined the US Department of Transportation following confirmation by the US Senate.
Sean McMaster becomes 22nd administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Jonathan Morrison has been appointed 17th administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
“Their work will help us rebuild America’s infrastructure [and] protect families on the road,” said US transportation secretary Sean P. Duffy.
“America is building again, and the expertise of our new administrators will allow us to execute President Trump’s bold transportation agenda.”
As Federal Highway Administrator, McMaster will lead FHWA in supporting state and local governments in the design, construction, and maintenance of the Nation’s highway system (Federal Aid Highway Program) and various federally and tribally owned lands (Federal Lands Highway Program).
Previous incumbents in the role include Shailen Bhatt.
At the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Morrison will be responsible for leading the agency’s efforts to reduce deaths, injuries, and economic losses from motor vehicle crashes.
This involves setting and enforcing vehicle safety standards, conducting research on traffic safety, and educating the driving public about safe driving practices.
