Intetra, based in Turkey, has harnessed the power of artificial intelligence to its popular stand-alone and flexible Primus Traffic Controller, explains Oner Kocak, an R&D engineer with the company. It can manage up to three intersections – upgradable to 32 – and has a 7-inch touchscreen for intuitive operation.

“The heart of TrafficTower's efficiency lies in our AI-based control algorithm, IntelliFlow,” he says. “It harnesses the power of reinforcement learning, a cutting-edge AI technique, to make split-second decisions about signal timings.”

Traditional traffic control relies on fixed time intervals for signal changes, resulting in inefficient use of green time and unnecessary congestion, particularly during peak hours. Even with the introduction of radars and cameras, which can track each individual vehicle, this data is disregarded and turned into virtual induction loops.

However, “the magic”, says Kocak, is that by harvesting and analysing real-time data from radars or cameras, this system orchestrates a dynamic and flexible traffic control environment. It can adapt to ever-changing road conditions, leading to improved traffic flow and enhanced traffic management. Traffic managers can prioritise the distribution of green time based on actual traffic volume and patterns to ensure collective waiting time at intersections is minimised.
