Leipzig-based bike-sharing provider Nextbike has won its first contract in Portugal, for the public transportation system in Barcelos.

Barcelos, a city of around 120,000, lies on the Atlantic coast about 25km south of Porto in northern Portugal.

Nextbike says the deal comes on the heels of a big expansion in Spain.

The Barcelos contract is with the local company of public transport and mobility provider, Transdev. 

Nextbike will provide the complete hardware, consisting of 200 of the latest GPS-locatable Smartbikes The system will be distributed initially across around 50 virtual stations but can easily be expanded.

Nextbikes said that its system will enrich the city's sustainable mobility offering and contribute to the 'transport revolution' in Barcelos.

Nextbike is a brand of Tier Mobility, a shared micromobility provider based in Berlin, Germany. It operates in more than 300 locations in over 20 countries.
