A digital twin of Russia's capital Moscow is to create a single database with all road objects, including signs, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and stops.

The Moscow Traffic Control Center (MTCC) is launching eight cars to digitise the city streets, making it possible to test all the road modifications at the design stage.

After the launch of the project, all experiments can be transferred to a digital form to help avoid mistakes and choose the most effective solutions.

A single database is expected to improve cooperation with other colleagues from related organisations.

In the future, the digital twin will allow the data to be used when testing unmanned vehicles and a Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) connection system.

Russia is not alone in its effort to harness this technology. Ouster's digital lidar is to help the German city of Aachen build digital twins as it prepares for Vehicle to Everything (V2X) deployments. In the UK, National Highways confirmed plans to use a virtual twin of the road network and intelligent road materials that can repair themselves as part of a digital strategy.
